Moby Offers Advice After Trump Win: ‘It’s Not Going to Benefit Anybody to Doomscroll’

Producer and activist Moby responds to Donald Trump’s 2024 election win with a call for self-care and resilience. He encourages people to avoid doomscrolling and focus on mental well-being.

As America processes the results of the 2024 presidential election, renowned producer and activist Moby has joined the ranks of artists voicing their opinions. In a video posted on Wednesday, November 6, Moby candidly expressed his disappointment with the election outcome, which saw Donald Trump secure a victory. Filmed outside in New York City, Moby addressed the camera directly, acknowledging the feelings many may share. “Obviously, the election results are terrible, and America and Americans have clearly made a really bad decision,” he said. However, Moby shifted the focus to the question, “What do we do now?”—encouraging a proactive and positive response despite the circumstances.

Moby’s Message: Avoiding Doomscrolling and Prioritizing Self-Care

In his message, Moby urged people to resist the urge to dwell excessively on the election news, a behavior often called “doomscrolling.” Recognizing that constant exposure to negative news could worsen anxiety and stress, he stated, “It’s not going to benefit anybody to doomscroll and watch the news and constantly just spiral down into depression.” Instead, Moby promoted a message of self-care and resilience.

Moby’s advice is grounded in simple, yet effective strategies to stay mentally and emotionally balanced: “We have to practice self-care, we have to eat well and exercise and spend time with people we love and help animals and do anything that keeps us sane and healthy.” This approach, he acknowledged, might sound “like a New Age cliché,” but he believes it to be essential in times of collective distress. In the caption accompanying his video, he expressed uncertainty about whether his message would make a difference but emphasized his intent to help. “I’m trying to figure out how to respond to what happened. Please take care of yourselves,” he wrote.

A Rare Politically Vocal Voice in Electronic Music

Moby stands out as one of the few electronic artists to regularly speak out on political issues. The electronic music community, especially in the United States, has been notably quiet on the political front, with many artists and promoters choosing to avoid public commentary in the lead-up to the 2024 election. This contrasts sharply with Moby’s stance; he has consistently voiced his opinions and used his platform to discuss his views.

Moby’s History of Criticism Toward Trump

Moby’s latest comments are in line with his longstanding criticism of Donald Trump. In an interview with Billboard back in May, he openly shared his disdain for the former president, apologizing in advance to anyone who might be a supporter. “Sorry if you or anyone you know is a Trump supporter,” Moby said. “But I’m stunned that this horrifying — I mean, he’s almost like some evil, lizard, space alien person pretending to be human because it’s like he’s cartoonishly evil, but yet 50% of Americans want to vote for him.” Moby’s frustration and disbelief over Trump’s appeal were clear, and he didn’t hold back in his assessment.

Other Artists Join the Conversation

Following the election, numerous artists from various genres have also taken to social media to express their reactions. Cardi B, Marc Rebillet, Bette Midler, Ethel Cain, and 50 Cent are among the musicians who have voiced a range of emotions in response to the election outcome. While some, like Moby, expressed disappointment, others offered support or shared messages of resilience.

Moby’s message serves as a reminder that while political outcomes may disappoint, maintaining mental health and prioritizing well-being can empower people to face the challenges ahead. His advocacy for self-care, grounded in simple actions like healthy eating, exercise, and time with loved ones, resonates with a wide audience, offering a constructive way forward in difficult times.
